Stewart Hefferman stormed to a 4th consecutive title in the Gerrards Cross Squash Club Championship on Sunday 2nd April bring his tally of titles to 5 which equals the club record set by M Schuyl in the late 80's. His opponent, Stephen Bailey struggled to gain a foothold in the match as Stewart took the first two games to love.
At the recent Winter Handicap Tournament, it was reported that Rory had started the final like a man keen to get back to catch something on the telly. To continue the analogy, Stewart seemed to be aiming to get back to catch last week's episode. He was 6-0 up in the 3rd before he dropped a point as Stephen found the nick he'd been searching for. Stewart took such offence at losing a point that he promptly lost several more before regaining the serve to take the game 9-7 and the title with it.
The other matches on the evening went largely to form. In the League 7 Plus tournament, John Pope took a closely fought first game before losing 3-1 to Peter Scott. John is the reigning Winter Points Champion from the leagues and seems to be heading for a creditable 2nd place in that competition this time around.
Robert Rickman took the Mens' Plate trophy, beating Andy Youngs 3-0 despite some spirited resistance from Andy.
The remaining match of the evening was in the Veterans' competition between Robin Hopkinson and Chris Hockin. It isn't a Finals Night without Chris but this time round, it was a semi-final which Robin took 3-1 with a series of heavily disguised shots. Robin will now meet Nick Hallchurch in the final which is to be played at 17:30 on Wednesday 5th April.
The Ladies Tournament will take the form of a round-robin competition from 16:00 on Saturday 8th April.
Junior tournaments have also been held and will be reported separately.
The Rob Milliner Summer Handicap Tournament came to a dramatic conclusion on Sunday 1st October with Toby Francis taking the honours in a breath-taking final against Andy Morris. Starting from 70 points to Andy's 65, Toby took a little while to find his touch but having done so was able to recover the deficit and then trade point for point despite furious industry from Andy.
Andy has been a regular on recent finals nights having won the tournament in 2003 and been runner-up in both this and the winter tournament. The crowd were familiar with his prodigious work-rate and passion which saw him recovering from polishing the floor with the seat of his pants to continue rallies on several occasions and twice within the same rally at least once. (Perhaps he should get the contract to clean the courts.)
Toby, who has recently returned to the club after several years, previously won the Summer Handicap in 1995 whilst a junior. Having regained his original points advantage, he eventually won the match by 100 - 94.
In the plate final, Akshay Gulati kept his head to beat Keith Marsh whilst managing to maintain the starting handicap points difference. Starting from a position of 75 - 60, the final score was 100 - 85.
Congratulations to both Akshay and Toby!
The annual Ken Hewison Winter Handicap Tournament was won last night by Michael Jacobs who triumphed over Rory Fisher in a fiercely contested final. The small crowd were treated to some tremendous squash in a classy final.
Starting with a handicap of 55 to Michael's 75, Rory took the first 6 or 7 points on the trot and looked very much like a man keen to get back home to catch something on the telly. However after his sluggish start, Michael recovered to stem the flow and battle to get back into the match. From this point he was able to defend his handicap advantage against Rory's challenge and held on to take the match with a 6 point cushion. (I hope Rory remembered to set the video!)
Earlier in the evening, the reigning Winter Handicap champion, Chris Hockin beat off a late challenge from David Sledge in a masterful display of synchronised running about to win the plate competition. Starting on a handicap of 60 to David's 75, Chris won the match to 97. Chris has won the plate on several occasions in the past and probably has enough to make a set now though the club website is strangely vague on the subject (perhaps we should inspect his kitchen cupboards).
